Vehicle Overview
The Jeep Grand Cherokee midsize SUV gets an update for the 2008 model year that includes a more powerful 4.7-liter V-8 engine and newly available entertainment options, including a MyGIG navigation and entertainment system and Sirius Backseat TV.

The Grand Cherokee is currently one of the few SUVs with an available diesel engine, but more automakers are expected to introduce diesels for their SUVs in the coming years. The 2008 Grand Cherokee hits dealerships in fall 2007. Pricing information has not been announced.


Exterior
Casual observers probably won't be able to tell the difference between a 2008 Grand Cherokee and a 2007 model; the differences are pretty subtle. The headlights and grille are new, but their overall appearance hasn't changed much. High-intensity-discharge headlights are newly optional and 18-inch chrome wheels are available.

Interior
Modifications to the cabin are modest and center on the dashboard, door panels and center console. The gauges are new, as are the door armrests and the leather-wrapped parking brake handle. The upscale Overland trim gets a wood steering-wheel rim and perforated leather seats with special piping.

The new Sirius Backseat TV system has a satellite video receiver and two roof antennas and can show three channels: Nickelodeon, Disney Channel and Cartoon Network. Shows can be viewed on the rear video screen and on the available MyGIG navigation radio's screen when the SUV is in Park. The MyGIG system has a 20GB hard drive that can store music and photos and can, in conjunction with Sirius Satellite Radio, reroute the Grand Cherokee around traffic problems.


Under the Hood
The Grand Cherokee's 3.7-liter V-6, 5.7-liter V-8, 6.1-liter V-8 and 3.0-liter diesel V-6 carry over unchanged from the prior model year, but the 4.7-liter V-8 receives a number of changes, including a higher compression ratio and new induction system; it makes 305 horsepower and 334 pounds-feet of torque. All engines team with a five-speed automatic transmission. The 6.1-liter makes 420-hp for the SRT8 version.

Rear- and four-wheel-drive versions are offered, and the latter driveline comes standard with Hill Descent Control that's designed to keep the SUV's speed to a crawl when traversing difficult terrain. Hill Start Assist is also offered and serves to keep the Grand Cherokee from rolling backward on an incline.


Safety
All-disc antilock brakes, side curtain airbags and an electronic stability system are standard. A rearview camera and rear parking sensors are available.

Top Five Concepts

Green is the new coin of the auto realm, both in the traditional folding money sense and in the desire to appear as being eco-friendly. Or at least that’s the conclusion to be drawn from this year’s crop of top concepts from the North American International Auto Show.


It’ll probably take in excess of a hundred grand of the folding stuff to take a seat behind the wheel of the Lexus LF-A Roadster concept, once the Japanese luxury maker finally sets an on-sale date for the 500-bhp V-10-powered supercar. Likewise, a fellow Asian automaker is seeking to project a sporty, upscale feel to its brand with the introduction of the Mitsubishi Concept-RA. Chrysler is looking to tap into the eco-friendly green zone with its Dodge ZEO show car, a sporty 2+2 pure electric car with a 250-mile range. The Mazda Furai is the fifth concept in a series exploring that manufacturer’s philosophy of using flowing shapes that not are not only appealing to the eye, but are also on the cutting edge of efficient aerodynamics. And the Land Rover LRX concept demonstrates that its SUV heritage can survive with a smaller, car-based footprint.


Lexus LF-A Roadster Concept

The tease continues. Lexus, which introduced its LF-A supercar two years ago, was thought to be bringing the final production version to Detroit. Instead, it showed a roadster version of the concept and revealed more details about the vehicle’s mechanical package.

While Lexus was cagey at first on whether the LF-A would be front- or mid-engine, it now acknowledges that the car will use a mid-front-mounted V-10 that “approaches 5.0 liters in displacement”, confirming speculation that it would be 4.8 liters. Part of the confusion over engine placement is due to the fact that the LF-A employs rear-mounted radiators, which are typical in mid-engine cars. The LF-A’s horsepower is said to be in excess of 500 bhp and Lexus claims a top speed of more than 200 mph. To more evenly distribute the vehicle’s weight, the sequential paddle-shift manual transmission is rear-mounted.

Like the coupe, the roadster stands just 48’ in. tall and rides on a 102.6-in. wheelbase. It measures 175.6 in. in overall length. While overall styling is similar to the coupe’s, the open LF-A now has a speed-adaptive rear wing incorporated into the design. The LF-A rides on massive 20-in. alloy wheels shod with 265/35R-20 tires up front and 305/30R-20 rubber in the rear.

The LF-A now sports prominent “F” logos on each front fender signifying that it is part of Lexus’ new F marque for models developed outside the normal vehicle engineering and development process.


Mazda Furai Concept

“Furai,” simply translated, means "sound of the wind" and is the fifth iteration or evolution of Mazda's new design language exemplified in its initial Nagare concept, which you may recall meant “flow.” Far from just a piece of artwork on wheels, this working concept actually began life as one of Mazda's 2006 season ALMS P2 race cars.

Built on a Courage C65 chassis and powered by a 450-bhp 3-rotor rotary engine, this ethanol (E100)-powered concept car is an exercise in reverse homologation: It represents an ideal within the Mazda philosophy, and that is to bridge the gap between single-purpose race cars (ALMS) and street-legal models (Ferrari Enzo, Lotus Elise), according to Mazda's Director of Design, Franz von Holzhausen.

The complex outer shell of the Furai clearly follows its predecessor's design trends, but through the guidance and expertise of Swift Engineering also functions aerodynamically. Front-fascia channels direct air to the brake ducts as strategically placed louvers on top of the front wheel fenders aid heat evacuation and help suck the front end closer to the ground. Its sculpted flanks create turbulence which draws air to the side ducts that help keep the engine cool in conjunction with the radiators mounted in the car's sidepods. Aft of the gullwing doors, flow-directing details continue to guide air over the car's rear haunches toward a large, functioning, adjustable-element spoiler. The sharp element you see protruding from the roof is called an Air Fang, and was designed by the guys at Swift to optimize ram air induction. Land Rover LRX Cross-Coupe

Amid strong speculation that Land Rover (and Jaguar) soon would be sold off by Ford, the Land Rover folks took the wraps off the LRX Cross-Coupe, only the second concept vehicle in the English company's history. With an emphasis more on on-road prowess than the mountain-goat abilities we typically associate with Land Rover, the LRX concept vehicle is seen as a compact, lightweight, fuel-efficient and ecologically friendly way to help Land Rover expand its global sales and perhaps become more attractive to potential suitors that include India's Tata.


As such, the LRX is built with environmentally friendly materials on a shortened version of the company's LR2 sport-utility vehicle, which means it's powered by a transverse-mounted inline-6 that sends power to all four wheels. We like the sloped-roof styling of the 2-door LRX, which maintains traditional Land Rover cues (particularly in front, with the clamshell hood) while incorporating bold elements such as strong fender flares. Inside the modern cabin, the four seats appear to hang from an exposed (and structural) center spine, covered in an attractive vegetable-tanned leather not unlike that of a baseball glove. What's more, the rear seats fold in a non-traditional way, creating enough room beneath the rear hatch for a pair of mountain bikes.


Land Rover will gauge public reaction to the LRX Cross-Coupe at the Detroit show, hoping it strikes a chord with people much like the Mini and Audi TT have done. If it does, and if the company can keep a production LRX looking just like this attractive concept, they may have a winner on their hands, as it will be the first Land Rover in which versatility and on-road dynamics do not take a back seat to off-road abilities. Hummer HX Concept

Looking to challenge Jeep Wrangler head-on, Hummer has come up with an entry-level offering called the HX. Riding on a 103.0-in. wheelbase, the open-top HX measures 171.0 in. overall and is powered by a 3.6-liter V-6 producing 304 bhp and 272 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The suspension features an independent front with coil-over shocks and a semi-trailing link rear. Brembo 6-piston caliper front and 4-piston rear disc brakes are found beneath 20-in. alloy wheels.


This rugged, go-anywhere, do-anything SUV has the angular, bare bones look of the original H1, but on a much smaller scale. The face of the vehicle has round headlamps in square housing, the seven-slot grille opening and an upright front windshield, all classic Hummer cues. In addition, the slant-back design of the HX and the matte olive paint scheme are intended to echo the military origins of the Hummer brand.


The top can be reconfigured from a closed cabin for all four passengers, an open rear cargo area like an SUT, or a completely open roadster. The exposed hinges allow the two doors to be removed, and the composite fender flares can also be detached for additional clearance on tight off-road trails.

New Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport

The world's most significant celebration of the automobile takes place annually in Monterey, California. This year it will see some of the most elegant, exclusive, and valuable vehicles ever produced in over 100 years of motoring, with Bugatti set to play a prominent role. On the evening prior to the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, the highlight of the event, the marque renowned for impeccable automotive solutions, aesthetics and driving dynamics will unveil a second model to the world – the new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport with a unique removable roof.

In response to customer demand, significant modifications have been made to the vehicle's complex structure to make possible open-top driving, thereby adding a new dimension to this high-performance sports car. Incorporating a host of new and innovative safety and equipment features, it is the world's fastest and most exciting roadster. It is immediately recognizable as a result of its slightly higher windscreen, stylized daytime running lights, and lightweight, transparent polycarbonate roof.

The main challenge in developing the new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport with removable roof resulted from the unique structure of the fixed-roof Bugatti Veyron. An optimum combination of rigidity and lightweight engineering ensures the monocoque passenger cell of the original model is extremely strong while weighing an absolute minimum – it is a central element of the vehicle's structure. As the roof is an integral part of this, removing it meant the load paths had to be completely redesigned to maintain the vehicle's rigidity and crash safety, and to offer additional protection from side impacts and rolling.

As a result, the monocoque structure has been reinforced around the side skirts and the transmission tunnel. The B-pillars have been cross-stiffened using a carbon fibre support, and a central carbon plate has been positioned beneath the transmission tunnel to ensure the vehicle suffers from less torsional flexing than any other roadster.

The doors of the new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport are made of carbon fibre, and house an integrated longitudinal beam.

In the event of an accident, this transfers the load from the A to the B-pillar, thereby dissipating impact energy. Furthermore, the two redesigned air intakes for the 16-cylinder mid-engine now feature 10-centimetre wide carbon-fibre elements to offer protection should the car roll.

Along with moisture-resistant, backstitched leather, a range of new equipment features has been added to the interior, including a reversing camera with 2.7-inch monitor in the rear-view-mirror, and the "Puccini" sound system with digital signal processor. When the roof is closed, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport can reach 407 km/h, while speeds of up to 360 km/h are possible with roof off. Should it rain, an innovative folding roof stored in the luggage compartment can be opened up like an umbrella at any time. When this folding roof is in place, the car can travel at up to 130 km/h. Assembled by hand at the company's headquarters in Molsheim, Alsace, the Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport will be available from March 2009 at the price of 1.4 million euros (excluding tax). Just 150 examples will be made, with the first 50 of these going exclusively to registered Bugatti customers.

The first vehicle is certain to be highly sought after, and Bugatti has taken the decision to donate this specific car to charity. It will be sold to the highest bidder at the Pebble Beach Auction presented by Gooding & Company.

Aspid’s performance and environmental credentials attract customers, media, and motor industry alike – IFR now seeking to appoint dealers.

More than 100 potential customers have signed up for an exclusive two days of high performance motoring thrills test driving the new Aspid sports car. Following the successful introduction of the car, IFR Automotive is now seeking to create a network of international dealers.

Described by a leading motoring magazine as the “Bugatti from Barcelona”, the compact two-seater attracted a high level of interest when it swept in quietly under the radar following five years of secret development to make its world debut at the British International Motor Show.

IFR, an automotive engineering consultancy that developed the supercar, expects most of its clientele will use the ride and drive event to confirm their interest and place deposits. It means the company could be facing a full order book for the next couple of years as it plans to produce the exclusive hand-built cars at the rate of less than one a week.

IFR is determined not to fall into the classic trap of setting unrealistically high sales targets and can make the project profitable building even fewer than 50 cars a year. By restricting the number of cars it builds it is also aiming to protect the investment of its clientele.

“We’ve been absolutely delighted with the level of interest from customers, the media and industry alike,” said company founder and automotive engineer Ignacio Fernandez. “Naturally, we’re thrilled that so many people have signed up for this unique opportunity to evaluate the Aspid on test tracks and public roads.

“We’ve worked very hard to redefine the modern sportscar and make it relevant to the needs of the 21st century. Almost everyone we met at the show has recognised that a lightweight and compact design is the way forward. We’ve aimed for a car with outstanding performance and driveability. And its exceptionally low mass ensures excellent fuel economy and correspondingly low CO2 emissions.”

The opportunity for the drive of a lifetime will take place in the mountains of northern Spain, close to the coastal cities of Tarragona and Barcelona, where the company is based. The test drive will most likely include the precipitous roads used for the main stages of the Catalonia Rally, which has formed part of the Aspid’s natural proving ground during its five year development programme.

Weighing in at less than 700kg, yet full of luxury touches such as climate control and touch screens as well as having an enclosed cabin, the Aspid represents a new breed of lightweight compact sports car. Packed full of advanced technical innovations in the chassis, suspension, brakes and electronic systems, the Aspid offers exceptional performance particularly relating to road holding, handling and safety.

Interestingly, the majority of potential customers for the car have expressed a preference for the more expensive supercharged model, which is priced at £107,000, more so than the 270bhp naturally aspirated version which will be sold at £75,000.

“Prospective customers have worked out that you can spend a lot more preparing other makes of cars for the race track,” says Fernandez. “With the Aspid it all comes as standard. The car is unique inasmuch as it meets FIA safety requirements as well as European homologation standards; so it really can be driven from the road directly onto the race track without the need for any special preparation. And after a hard race the car is robust, durable and safe enough to be driven again on public roads.”

Potential clients also seem to appreciate the personal touch. Fernandez remained on the stand throughout the motor show answering every question imaginable that has been put to him about the car he’s created and the company he’s founded.

“We particularly enjoyed the visits from other carmakers interested in the Aspid’s technology, which can be applied to a wide range of vehicles,” said Fernandez. “The need to significantly reduce the weight of all vehicles is a highly topical subject and important to the entire industry in terms of delivering personal mobility that is environmentally friendly, socially acceptable and economically sustainable.

“We’ve also been pleased with comments from motoring journalists and other media who took the opportunity for a close look at the car while it was at the show,” added Fernadez.

The Autocar website, for example, has a video of their writers’ pick of the best cars at the show. Deputy news editor Will Powell cast his vote for the Aspid as being “something special in low volume sports cars” citing the “loads of clever technology and loads of carbon fibre”. In the magazine itself, news editor Dan Stevens refers to the “tiny two-seater … as a showcase for some clever new technologies that could be used in more conventional, higher-volume vehicles.”

The Aspid also proved a favourite with Dan Trent, a journalist with the popular MSN Cars motoring website, which placed the car in its Top 10 for the show: “The amazing build quality and astonishing technology had me stunned. And then I heard about the sub-3 sec 0-62 time. Check out the interior too and the neat F1 style steering wheel with all the controls and dials incorporated into one unit. And if you go to a track you can even download telemetry from a previous lap by a pro driver and it will flash up braking points on the steering wheel for you. Seriously cool.”

Not surprisingly, the Spanish media have written extensively about their home grown talent in vehicle design with coverage in the leading national daily newspapers ABC and El Pais as well as a front cover story and articles in the regional dailies El Punt and El Periodico and the local newspaper Diari de Tarragona. The Spanish weekly car magazines Autobild, Hebdo Sport, Auto Pista and Motor 16 have all written about the car.

It’s not the first time that Ignacio Fernandez has received accolades from a motor show appearance. In Detroit in 2001 he was part of the design team responsible for the Cadillac Cien concept, officially recognised as the best engineered car at the show.

Ferrari Engineered by Officine Panerai is delighted to announce its debut at the British International Motor Show. The collection of high-end watches from the luxury Italian watch brand Officine Panerai will be on public display for the first time at this year's 'Ultimate Collection' at the ExCeL Centre in Docklands.

Engraved on the cases and bracelets of all the 19 models presented from 2006 until now, three of which are special editions and particularly precious and exclusive watches, is an inscription that expresses and illustrates the working practice of the watch engineers. It reads: Engineered by Officine Panerai. It's a matter of meticulous, precise research carried out by observing in a precise and painstaking manner all Ferrari models created in its 60 year history. This has been at the font of inspiration in achieving the production of a range of watches in which the best materials, and a manic attention to detail, merge into perfection.

The body has been redesigned to be more curvaceous and aerodynamic. Although the drag coefficient remains the same, downforce has been greatly enhanced. A great deal of Ferrari heritage is found in the car: at the rear, the Enzo's tail lights and interior vents have been added. The car's name has been etched into the Testarossa-styled driver's side mirror. The large oval openings in the front bumper are reminiscent of Ferrari racing models from the 60s, specifically the 156 "sharknose" Formula One car and 250 TR61 Le Mans cars of Phil Hill.

The Audi A1 by Jacek Peplowski (Poland)


Rone is about lifestyle and technology concentrated in a city car of minimized size. This concept chooses sophisticated language that captures the eye at first glance. Boguslaw Paruch (Poland) designs surfaces that are almost flat in appearance through the long, straight lines that sharply bend accentuating the corners. This edgy design and the extensive use of colour contrast are the most noticeable characteristics in Rone. Less is more: the front is characterized by a large negative surface, almost free of visible elements, that brings together the headlamps at the two extremes. The wide usage of black and white – here, as well as on the rims - brings detail, together with some features such as the roof bars, that are styling elements rather than functional ones. The Rone interior offers countless possibilities for personalisation and solutions in design orientated towards maximising its compatibility with i-pod and all electronic devices that is nowadays essential. The glazing envelopes the cockpit lowering towards the wheel to facilitate viewing for a younger passenger sitting in the backseat. Overall, Rone aims for a new target of young couples or families rebelling against the station wagon, opting for a small car with a non-conventional design and a strong character for city mobility.

The Audi A1 by Jacek Peplowski (Poland) comes up at the base of the Audi range with a proposal halfway between a city coupƩ and a compact MPV.
The surfaces are smooth; the sides are strengthened with diagonal lines that express energy and sportive action.
The wheelarches and the rocker are emphasised while front and rear overhangs in particular, are notably reduced. The beltline is pretty high and outlines the design of the door-handles at the bottom of the glass panel.
A panoramic window runs right round including the cabin connecting the front and the sides.
The whole volume and the surface treatment give an idea of controlled power, wrapped up in a small space for the city-liver who recognises strong design.

SPD Master’s course offers a professional and well established training pathway lasting 12 months. Participants have the chance to upgrade their design skills getting involved in challenging projects, in close contact with leading personalities of the automotive world. The programme is constantly updated in order to grant fresh ideas and resourses to partner companies that every year support the Master’s course.
The outcome of 07-08 edition, held in collaboration with Alfa Romeo, has been recently unveiled in presence of Lorenzo Ramaciotti, Head of Styling for Fiat Group Automobiles and Maserati. The result is nine models developed with the assistance of designers from the Style Center based in Arese (Milano). Antonio Rosti, Alessandro Maccolini and SPD tutors worked in close collaboration with fifteen international students envisioning modern interpretations of Alfa Romeo’s long and distinguished legacy of sporty yet elegant saloon cars.
The previous editions of this educational programme have been run in association with the Audi Design Center led by Walter de’ Silva first and later by Wolfgang Egger. From 2005 until 2007 students have been conducting an intense researchwork for the brand with the four-ring emblem investigating in innovative design solutions for Audi’s most successful concept, Avant, and developing the Max4 project: a compact lifestyle car in less than four metres with the typical sportiness, comfort and luxury feeling of Audi models.

Master’s in Transportation Design


The 2008-2009 edition of the Master’s in Transportation Design - from October 2008 up to October 2009 - is in association with Lamborghini.
After two years of successful collaboration with Audi and the most recent, challenging experiences with the Italian brand Alfa Romeo, again Scuola Politecnica di Design draws attention back to the legendary brand Lamborghini, worldwide synonymous with sportiness, exclusivity and the extreme character of its iconic models.
Participants from all the world will develop a new concept car under the guidance of SPD tutors assisted by Filippo Perini, Lamborghini Head of design, and his staff.
The Master’s programme also features lectures with leading figures in car design and guided tours of design centres, museums and exhibitions. Visits will be held at Lamborghini headquarter in Sant’Agata, Modena.

"We used a combination of convex and concave surfaces to control the balance of light and shadow on the car which creates this beautiful contrast of having sharp lines within the sculpted exterior surfaces," said Kevin Hunter, vice president of Calty Design Research, Inc. "The idea was to create a sense of strength and softness at the same time, adding an air of mystery."

A LEXUS LF-A concept

A LEXUS LF-A concept was first revealed back in 2005, but was revived with alterations for 2007 at the Detroit Motor Show.
The Lexus LF-A is a high performance supercar concept powered by a mid-front mounted 500 horsepower V10 engine.
As with all recent Lexus vehicles, the styling of the 2007 LF-A is rooted in a design direction called L-finesse. The concept of L-finesse was used to shape and detail the original LF-A of 2005, and it was used to reshape, redetail and redefine the latest version. Lexus has further refined the styling of the new LF-A to enhance its exotic nature with a greater use of curved surfaces and interesting details.

"The first LF-A was a pure concept, but one that we went so far as to conduct engineering analysis on," said Bob Carter, Lexus Division group vice president and general manager. We got to see the Lexus LF-A concept at the 2005 Detroit Auto Show. And catch a few eyes it definitely did. The new design philosophy visible in the LF-A was called L-Finesse by Lexus.
While the initial information was that it would be a V8 powering this supercar, the latest rumors are that the LF-A would be powered by a hybrid engine. The V8 would be there, but there would be an electric motor too - and the specifications for that is not available yet.
The V8 would be a 5 litre engine producing 435 bhp. The power distribution and how big a role the electric motor would play is unknown yet. Well, a hybrid supercar is in some ways a little late to the party - especially when an all-electric supercar (?), The Tesla Electric Roadster, has just been launched.

Celebrating the fortieth anniversary of the 1968 Shelby Cobra GT500KR, Ford and Shelby Automobiles will unveil the 2008 Shelby GT500KR at the2007 New York International Auto Show. Just like its 1968 namesake, the 2008 Ford Shelby GT500KR builds on the strong foundation of the Shelby GT500. Packing 40 more horses under its custom-designed carbon composite hood, the GT500KR is the most powerful production Ford Mustang ever produced.

“I’m proud to once again be a part of an historical moment, bringing back the ‘King of the Road’ Mustang, and collaborating with Ford SVT and Ford Racing,” said Carroll Shelby. “I’m committed to continuously upping the ante when it comes to performance, and it’s great to be doing it with Ford.”

The 1968 Shelby Cobra GT500KR was a mid-year introduction, based on the 1968 Shelby GT500. Ford added ‘Cobra’ to the Shelby’s moniker to help usher in the beginning of a new performance era at the company. The Cobra name referred to the new 428 Cobra Jet V-8 that was planted under the KR’s custom fiberglass hood. It was the engine that would once again vault the Mustang to the head of the pack.

“The return of the Shelby GT500KR further establishes Mustang as the true king of the pony car segment,” said Robert Parker, manager of Ford Car Brand. The Shelby GT500KR will be produced in an exclusive run of 1000 units and will begin arriving in Ford dealers in the spring of 2008.

The 2005 Ford Mustang captured the hearts and minds of fans and future owners when the all-new model debuted. But the proportions and design of Ford’s first purpose-built muscle car in 30-plus years caught the eyes and sparked the imaginations of a pair of the world’s leading coachbuilders in Italy as well.

“When we saw the new Mustang, we knew two things: It was the best we’d seen since the original, and we had to get our hands on one,” said Fabrizio Giugiaro, styling director of Italdesign – Giugiaro S.P.A.

So in early 2005, Giugiaro pitched J Mays, Ford Motor Company’s group vice president, Design and chief creative officer, on his idea to do an Italian job on the beloved Mustang. The Ford Mustang gets a whole new outlook with a glass roof option for the 2009 model year. This option comes in response to drivers’ increasing desire for natural light in their cars,




particularly as their commutes get longer. It also offers a convenient midpoint for those looking for the view of a convertible with the climate-control and structural integrity of a traditional coupe.

The roof is made of specially-formulated glass that blocks infrared rays, protecting both the car’s occupants and its upholstery. This glass also reduces vehicle cool-down time by 50 percent. The model incorporates a retractable blind that may be used to block the sun and provide privacy.

The new roof will be available as an option on both the V-6 Mustang and Mustang GT beginning in the summer of 2008. This brings the number of roof options available on the Ford Mustang up to three. The model joins the 2008 Mustang Bullitt and 2008 Shelby GT500KR, adding variety to the Mustang stable for its 45-year anniversary. The glass roof option will cost $1,995, or half the cost of the convertible option.

I was still in high school and got tired of 9 mpg. I thought 20 mpg would be a good thing. I instantly missed my Boss -- The 80's were not much better and even though the 90's 5.0's have a strong following -- THEY ARE NOT MUSTANGS!!!! Quick Drive: 2009 BMW 750i


It's not easy to replace flame surfacing, the Bangle butt, and iDrive with a new car that's just as radical. Without appearing to try, BMW has pulled this off with equally controversial styling and potentially infuriating new technology. American luxury-car buyers will have the choice of just one version when it launches in November: the 750i, which means we get it only with the new 4.4L twin-turbo V-8, making 407 hp and 442 lb-ft in Euro trim. The engine first appeared in the X6, in which it is rated 400 hp and 450 lb-ft for the U.S. BMW says fuel efficiency is 1.8 percent better than the outgoing 750i, achieves ULEV2 and EU 5 emissions standards, and is the most efficient car in its class.

The other radical new option is Integral Active Steering, which controls the steering angles, front and rear. Like four-wheel steering from, say, GMC and Honda before it, the rear wheels turn (up to three degrees, either way) with the front wheels at low speeds, opposite them at higher speeds. The 7's turning radius is tightened, making the car feel smaller than it is in tight places. Turn off the Dynamic Stability Control completely and you can steer with the throttle and bring the tail out, but only within limits of what is still a very large car. Despite an 82-lb weight reduction, including more standard equipment on the new model, it's still too big and heavy to drift through left-right transitions.
